Curriculum

Our curriculum places knowledge at its heart: we want our students to experience the joy of learning, and we know this helps them become confident, articulate, and resilient young people.

All our curriculum programmes are academically ambitious, but clear, carefully planned teaching allows all children to succeed. We use widely available programmes, such as Maths Mastery, where we believe they are highly effective. More often, subject experts at our Trust’s Curriculum Centre have developed our own schemes of work, typically supported by our own textbooks, in subjects ranging from Latin and history to English and science.

We take the time to carefully choose what knowledge to teach, prioritising what will be of the greatest value to our students in their later lives. We work out how to teach it in a way that helps children remember it and understand how different parts of the curriculum relate to each other.

PSHE and RSE

All students at The Grange Academy study PSHE and RSE to compliment the academic curriculum. PSHE Education (Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education) is a planned programme of learning through which children and young people acquire the knowledge, understanding and skills they need to successfully manage their lives – now and in the future. As part of a whole-school approach, PSHE Education develops the qualities and attributes pupils need to thrive as individuals, family members and members of society. PSHE allows for effective communication skills as ideas, opinion, observations, and real-life situations are shared. Pupils thoughts are reflected out within a group and discussions, providing opportunities for adaptive thinking, solving real life scenarios. Pupils are encouraged to respect other opinions and exploration of topic areas, building communication skills, and understanding of others. Emotional well-being is a huge focus in PSHE as pupils look at a range of topics from health and well-being, the wider world and Relationships, incorporating Sex, relationships and health education.Pupils learn the skills and emotional responses needed to be adaptable adults in a real world. Pupils will learn a multitude of skills that require them to have emotional well-being, transferring them to real life situations.*New* for 2024/25 we will be working with 'Life Lessons' to provide up to date and relevant information regarding our RSE offer. Cultural Capital Discussions

Over the course of the academic year, we have a weekly discussion in our form groups based around topical debates and current news. We call this our Cultural Capital discussion in order to expose our students to the wider discussions happening across the world. We encourage pupils to 'vote' on these topics at part of our link to British Values and 'Democracy'.
